The year 2000

PUNJABI CULTURAL SOCIETY OF CHICAGO (P.C.S.) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Punjabi Culture, Punjabi language and performing arts among youth and adults throughout Midwest USA. Many community volunteers have worked hard since the early eighties in pursuit of these goals, but P.C.S. was officially registered under it’s present name in Illinois state in 1993. Later it was approved as a 501 c (3) non-profit corporation.  P.C.S. organizes three major annual events:

 1.   “Rangla Punjab,” to celebrate Vaisakhi, a variety cultural program of Punjabi music, songs, dance, skits and poetry to encourage local talent participation. P.C.S. volunteers coach and prepare youth and adult Bhangra, Gidha teams and group dances free of charge. This stage show usually takes place in spring.

2.   “Punjabi Sports Festival,” a free event, community sports day, to promote physical fitness. It includes tournaments of Kabaddi, Volleyball, Basketball, Athletics, Soccer, Weight lifting and many other field events. The winners are given awards. It is held during summer.

3.   “P.C.S. Night” is an annual dinner and dance event with a popular Punjabi entertainment artist or a famous musical group. It takes place in late fall.

In addition to the above major programs P.C.S. also organizes the following:

P.C.S. Scholarship– Given to Punjabi college going high school seniors or college freshmen based on their academic achievements and Punjabi cultural participation.

P.C.S. Exhibition – Punjabi art and cultural exhibition at various local village libraries, schools and colleges.

Asian American Coalition of Chicago – P.C.S. co-sponsors Lunar New Year Celebration Dinner Banquet in February and Asian American Parade and Festival in May/June organized by Asian American Coalition of Chicago.
