“BALLE BALLE " BHANGRA AT McCORMICK PLACE

PUNJABI CULTURAL SOCIETY OF CHICAGO PRESENTED BHANGRA AT THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CENTENNIAL CONVENTION MEGA EVENT AT McCORMICK PLACE

Chicago:  While the wonderstruck audience was still vigorously clapping and tapping their feet,
the Rotary Convention Cultural program chair Ester Hana proclaimed, “thank you for a wonderful and energetic presentation of the Indian culture.”

The venue was the internationally known lake front venue McCormick Place Convention Center, and the mega event was the Rotary International Centennial Convention on Sunday June 19, 2005.

Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (PCS) groups presented Punjabi Bhangra dances and several other music and dance items at the convention. The 40 minute cultural and entertainment performances included Punjabi songs, Punjabi Dhol, and Bhangra 101 lessons.

Many Rotary conventioneers ditched the lecture classes rushing to the auditorium when they heard the sounds of Bhangra dhol beat. Suddenly the house became jam packed. There was a wave of jubilation in the air, and thousands of Rotarians were clapping and tapping their feet, enjoying the performances and the Bhangra101 lessons.

The Rotary International, born in Chicago in 1905 www.rotary.org/centennial/index.html celebrated it’s 100 years of service and success. More than 40,000 Rotarians from all over the world were at McCormick Place attending this five day centennial convention. At peak times there were as many as 10,000 people in the hall. A huge contingent of Rotarians from India also attended this convention. Eradication of polio worldwide as a service project is their current focus among many other service activities in the developing countries.

 “We have taken this opportunity to present Punjabi cultural performances to entertain the Rotarians from all over the world in a spirit of love, peace and harmony among all mankind,” said Mohinderjit Singh Saini, the coordinator of P.C.S. performances at the convention.

The performances included, Remix Bhangra Dance-Garam Masala coordinated by Sonia Singh, Lisa Mathew; Bhangra Dance by - Shaan Punjab Di Group, Coordinated by Mohinderjit S. Saini, and participated by Jaskaran S. Saini, Rai Barinder Singh, Barinder Saini, Jasvinder S. Dhesi; Bhangra Dance (Punjabi Spice) performed by Ingrid Breitfelder  and Nisha Thyle; Bollywood Bhangra Dance - coordinated by Ranjit Sapal, and performed by Punjabi Mutiyaran - Robin Sangha, Jasleen Sangha, Meghana Walia, Naiha Walia, Naina Walia, Arjun Walia, Sabrina Sapal, and Harleen Saini.


Bhangra 101 lessons were coordinated by Ingrid Breitfelder, Jaswinder Sapal, and Mohinderjit S. Saini.
Punjabi Song - Mitran Noo Maar Giya ni tera jhumka, by Vicky Singh Saini; Live music and dhol was played by Ajay S. Randhawa, Maninder Singh, Sabrina Sapal,  and Sukhi Basati.

The P.C.S. participation was coordinated by Mohinderjit Singh Saini, Jaswinder Singh Sapal, Sunny Kular, and Rajinder Singh Mago.
