BONE MARROW DONOR REGISTRY PARTICIPATION
www.marrow.org
We, Mr. Kiran and Mrs. Kalpana Desai, of Springfield, IL. USA
appeal on behalf of our 14-year old son, Krupal Desai, who is
fighting against Acute Myelogenic Leukemia (Acute Blood Cancer),
for volunteers to register in the National (Bone) Marrow Donor
Program. Our son Krupal, who just completed grade 9, is
undergoing Chemotherapy currently but would need the transplant
in less than 2 months with no matching donor available from his
immediate family.
At present, only less than 0.1 % of Indian population has been
registered with the Worldwide Bone Marrow Registry, with only
5000 people registered in USA. Hence, whenever an Indian person
needs Bone Marrow Transplant, it becomes extremely difficult to
find the right match for him or her. Often, the person does not
survive while a search for a match is still going on. Chances of
survival without Bone marrow transplant are less than 50 % only.
Hence, if all members of Indian Community between the age of 18
through 60 years, men and women alike, have their name on the
National Bone marrow Registry, it would help save hundreds of
lives. The registration process is harmless and involves only
having a small amount of Blood drawn and get it tested for HLA
typing. There is no binding to any potential donor by having
their name on the register. When the blood test results of a
person match with a prospective recipient, the Registry contacts
the person for getting the consent of the person.
The testing of blood can be arranged free for the minorities by
way of arranging a community drive upon contacting the National
(bone) Marrow Donor Registry Center on the www.marrow.org or by calling
1-800-Marrow2 (1-800-627-7692) or their nearest center to you.
The drive should be preferably combined with a social or
religious event to ensure adequate response of Indian Community
members, You can also contribute to the drive by simply
circulating a copy of this appeal to all your friends,
relatives, neighbors, the local Indian newspapers, the local
Indian associations or groups (civic or religious) by fax or
e-mail or post or by posting on the bulletins at the civic
and/or religious gatherings of Indian communities and so
on.
We Indians have always believed in helping other community
members and we trust that our call in times of our distress
would not go unheeded.
