Chicago: The Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago, held their annual
Punjabi dinner and dance banquet, "PCS Night 2000", on Nov. 4.
More than 1000 Punjabis from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan,
Missouri, and Kansas jam-packed the India House Banquet Hall in
Schaumburg to get a taste of Punjabi folk and pop culture, cuisine, and
extravaganza. Hoping to buy their tickets at the gate, many fans could
not get in due to a full house and sold out show. This program was the
first hit Punjabi show of the new millennium in the Midwest.
"Jazzy Bains", Punjabi folk and pop singer from England,
accompanied by the Punjabi film music director Sukhshinder Shinda and
other musicians gave a thrilling performance. The band entertained the
audience with a variety of music from soft melodious songs to vibrant
foot-tapping Bhangra and Gidha folk songs with Dhol blasting Punjabi
music. The audience full of teenagers and all ages danced to their heart’s
content. Delicious Punjabi appetizers and sumptuous dinner was served.
Security arrangements were immaculately maintained. High tech sound
system was well set-up throughout the banquet hall and dance floors.
Darshan Singh Dhaliwal, C.E.O. Bulk Petroleum, who was also the grand
sponsor of the event, gave a plaque of appreciation to the star of the
evening singer-artist Jazzy B.
Others honored were, grand sponsor and PCS chairman Sukhdev Singh
Multani who in turn distributed awards to, gold sponsors Metlife
Financial Services, I.M.A. president Dr. Birinder Singh Marwaha, Matrix
Packaging Inc. general manager Raj Judge. Ramesh Vitha of Vitha Jeweller
was honored as the chief guest. The silver sponsors included, Punjab
Auto, A-1 Carpet, Dr. Sarabjit Singh Bhandal, Manmohan Singh Deol (a.k.a
Wrestler Killer Khalsa Singh), Amolak Singh Gidda of Aviation
Consulting, Swaranjit Singh Dhillon, a businessman and past chairman of
PCS, Indian Platter Restaurant, Regal Sari and Jewelers. Punjabi Radio
Program "Raunak Mela" hostess Pammi Gill was also honored with
a plaque of appreciation.
Amarjit Kaur Atwal shed light on the children programs being organized
by PCS including Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups, children’s
basketball, swimming and soccer teams. Mohinderjit Singh Saini welcomed
the audience and enumerated 2000 PCS achievements including partnering
and performances at American mainstream events, Dr. Harjinder Singh
Khaira introduced "Jazzy" and the group, Bhagwant Singh Sandhu
introduced the PCS Board members for 2000-2001, Rajinder Singh Mago
announced the sponsorship awards. Bini Basati introduced the second half
of the show.
The 2000-2001 PCS officials and board of directors were introduced as
follows: Sukhdev Singh Multani (Honorary Chairman), Harwinder Pal Singh
Lail (President), Bhagwant S. Sandhu (Senior vice-president), Sunny S.
Kular (vice-president), Dr. Harjinder S. Khaira (Executive Secretary),
Onkar S. Sangha (Finance Secretary), Jasbir S. Palia (Asstt. Finance
Secretary), Jaswinder S. Sapal and Navraaz K. Basati (Youth Affairs
Directors), Jagjit S. Dhindsa (Special Programs Director), Yadwinder
Singh Grewal and Gurmit S. Mudhar (Public Relations Directors), Bhinder
S. Pamma and Jagmeet Singh (Sports Directors), and Amarjit K. Atwal
(Children Affairs Director)
This program was also organized by Mohinderjit S. Saini, Menjinder S.
Bhambra, Thakar S. Basati, Rajinderbir S. Mago, Sukhmel S. Atwal, Gulzar
Singh Multani and many volunteers.
The outgoing PCS president Mohinderjit Singh Saini thanked his team and
board members for their tremendous team effort and dedication in
organizing these events and thanked the sponsors in helping PCS organize
such quality events.
Harwinder Pal Singh Lail, the new PCS president, appealed to the
community for participation, support and sponsorships for PCS programs.
He stressed the need for a Punjabi Community Center in Chicagoland area.
He outlined next year’s calendar of events, with Vaisakhi cultural
program "Rangla Punjab ‘2001", "Punjabi Pages",
"Youth Symposia", "Punjabi Sports Festival",
"Punjabi Exhibition", "PCS Scholarships", Boy Scout
& Girl Scout and Senior’s Tea Party.
The incoming Chairman, Sukhdev Singh Multani, expressed his support for
PCS and vowed to work toward community building and promotion of Punjabi
culture.
PCS looks forward to another year of fun activities. Please join us for
the Vaisakhi cultural program "Rangla Punjab ‘2001" to be
held on April 14 at Gateway Theater in Chicago. Interested
participantsmust register by Dec 31, 2000 with their PCS item
coordinator, announced Rajinder Singh Mago.
