Punjabi Sports Festival An Annual Event

A community sports day to promote physical fitness.  It includes tournament of Kabaddi, Volleyball, Basketball, Athletics, Soccer, Weight lifting and many other field events and fun items.

KABADDI, BHANGRA AEROBICS AND WARRIOR WORKOUT YOGA AT P.C.S. “PUNJABI SPORTS FESTIVAL 2006” ON JULY 16 AT CONANT HIGH SCHOOL GROUNDS IN HOFFMAN ESTATES

CHICAGO: Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (P.C.S.) announced it’s 12th annual sports festival in Chicago area. With focus on fitness and summer fun the vibrant Punjabi Community of Chicago is going all out to enjoy a healthier community fun fair “Punjabi Sports Festival 2006” this year on Sunday, July 16, from 9 AM to 6 PM, at Conant High School grounds, 700 East Cougar Trail, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, near Higgins and Plum Grove Avenues.

Bhangra aerobics by Shamila Khetarpal is scheduled to be at 12:30 pm and the warrior workout yoga by Shiva Singh Khalsa will be at 2 pm. Both of these are for all levels and almost anyone can do it. All are welcome and there is no charge.

Kabaddi, soccer, basketball, and volleyball teams from Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, New York, and Illinois are competing for the championships. The Kabaddi finals are scheduled to be at 4 pm.

Mayor of Palatine Rita Mullins is scheduled to inaugurate the festival, her 12th year in a row, several other dignitaries are also invited to attend. A parade of the participants will take place at 12 noon.

This community event will include many team sports and fun games for men, women and children. Kabaddi, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Athletics, Kho-Kho, Bhangra aerobics, and Yoga are on the schedule.

Free continental breakfast, soft drinks and complimentary Punjabi lunch will be provided to all in attendance. There is no entrance fee for the spectators. Parking is free. 

“Our aim is to bring our community together, create the awareness of a healthy lifestyle while having fun this summer and always,” said Jasbir Singh Palia the P.C.S. president.

“Exercise, fun, food, tournament, entertainment, and socializing, all for free, you can’t go wrong!””, said Dr. Navdeep Kaur Sandhu the PCS chairperson.

Dead line for teams to enter the tournament is July 9, 2006.

Individual athletes can register before or on the day of the event by noon. Team registration fee is $25 per team. Individual sports registration fee is $2.

Due to a large number of contesting teams, the Basketball tournament matches, will be played on Saturday, July 15 2006, 9 am to 6 pm at Palatine Park District, 250 E. Wood Street, Palatine, IL. The other games will be at the main event on July 16 at Conant High School.

Busy schedule calls for the volleyball games to start early. Soccer and Kabaddi finals will follow. Athletic events will include track and field events, and races for different age groups and gender are on the tap.    

Prize distribution to the winners will highlight the fun-filled closing ceremonies.

Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place athletes for individual sports and the team players. Kabaddi Cup, Soccer Cup, Volleyball Cup and Basketball Cup will be awarded to the winning teams.

This is an all day community event starting at 9 AM. Fun games for the seniors and ladies will include musical chairs, water balloon toss and tug-of-war. The program is not for profit. Sponsors and donors will be appropriately recognized at the festival. Vendors are encouraged to set up their product display booths.
